Lets see what the hype is all about. On Instagram, I keep getting ads from other Bookstagramers that rave over Sarah J. Maas.
I bought this book years ago. I don’t even remember when or how it got onto my bookshelf…maybe it appeared there? Maybe Maas chose me to be the teller of truth?

Maybe I’m just a forgetful woman with a squirrel brain lol
Aaaanyway, the cover is cool. I like the inlay of the particles within the title. Am I even using that wordage right? Prolly not, but it makes me feel fancy, so I’ll keep it.
The lady with the feathery dress? Are those scales on the bodice? The cool tattoo looking arm? Anyway, it’s a nice cover. I like the red and black. Feels lite goth vintage. Makes me want to wear a corset.

So, chapter 1. I just finished reading it, but I don’t remember if the pov FMC has a name yet. I remember reading Isaac Hale, Elain (which bothers me that it’s spelled that way. Elaine has an E at the end, thank you very much!), and another sister I don’t remember.
It’s winter, she’s starving, she has a bow and three arrows. One is a fancy arrow. Powerful enough to give pause to faeries. And in this world, faeries = BAD!
Bow girl goes on and on about how bleak the winter is. I get it, she’s hungry, she’s cold, maybe not cold enough with how worn her clothing sounds? I dunno. I’m just sitting here cronching on some mini cucumbers to try and feel like I gave myself a vegetable for my body to feel all proud of me for trying.

But what ho? She spots a doe?

Not yet tres skinny to be of no use?! Hazzah!
Bow girl hides behind some thorny bushes and takes aim.
Le gasp! A wolf has entered the arena! Tis a massive wolf, silvery one moment. Obsidian the next. Is it a faerie wolf? Alas, bow girl does not know! So, she decides to use her faerie killing ash arrow just in case. So, if it’s a fae, is it, like, a werewolf? Because those are dope! Or is it more like a skinwalker thing where the dae transforms into an animal and it’s not a full moon sort of dealio?
Either way, the hunter becomes the hunted as bow girl takes aim at the wolfasaurus that takes aim at the doe-eyed doe. Wolf kills doe. Bow girl kills wolf.
Side thought, her sisters are older, yes? Am I remembering that right? Why aren’t they out hunting and just relying on her to bring the noms? If she weren’t alone, she’d probably be able to bring back both the dead doe AND wolfasaurus-rex. If their father were there too, ya know? Anyways, back to the story…

She decides to skin the wolf and take the doe, leaving the heaping pile of wolf meat just laying there. Was the wolf too skinny? I’d imagine it probably had more meat on its massive bones than a baby deer…
Anyway, so far, kind of meh? Like, it feels like any other fantasy story I’ve read? But we’ll see.

Maybe I’ll be surprised. Chapter ones’ll chapter one. There’s plenty more book to get through.
