My First DNF…

So, this book was advertised to me on IG. It sounded interesting and up my alley! It was a short story, too, which means faster reading for me since my ADHD squirrel brain gets distracted easily plus my child running around, so I’m half-focused most of the day.

Behold:

So, it was at a steeper $12 on Amazon (plus shipping), but I had good faith and hopes that this would be a hidden gem! There are a decent number of reviews that are highly favored, so I took the plunge.

It arrived promptly, and I was like, sweet! Let’s get started!

Fam….FAM! Le sigh…

It started…fine. It was fine, whatever, but I had this recognition. This sinking feeling. This…

Okay, before I continue, side note, it’s relevant, I promise!

As Thomas Sanders from the good ol’ Vine days (and beyond) would say…

I listen to a lot of YouTube narrations from reddit because I find them entertaining, albeit, very obviously, untrue and purely fictional stories made up (duh, that’s what fictional means…). Anywaaaays, I’ve developed a keen ear for when said reddit stories are obviously written by AI…not narking Chatgpt or anything, she’s an ADHD girl’s bestie for organization! Love her!

But…

It’s OBVI when something is written by AI with no editing. Like, the telltales are frequently used names. The pool of names currently used are:

Evan

Priya

Ethan

Kellan and so on and so forth…

Plus, there are other tells like how things are worded:

Maybe — just maybe —

Some overly flowery description that tries to be funny and witty and ๐ŸŽถgay!๐ŸŽถ (I added that last part because of West Side Story)

There are others, but again, distracted-brain has me distracted from remembering more details.

And so. Many. Em dashes!

Anyhoo, I’m reading this book, and seeing all the signs, and I’m like….

Did this author not even try to edit this? Did she just type in a prompt and ask for a story? And then, was like, okay, publish?!

Again, speculation. Tis my opinion. Don’t at me, y’all! Allegedly, all the buzz words to let others (and maybe even the AI overlords in the future reading this) to know that this is clearly my opinion and not fact.

But, like…

Ya had to do me dirty like that? Ya had me thinking this was gonna be a well written story worth my time and money and focus for poor execution?

(Wow, Michelle Visage is really working it with the gifs today…)

IN MY OPINION!

So, I put it down and didn’t finish…

With my eating disorder healing journey, I’m learning to not waste valuable calories on food that I don’t enjoy, so is the same with my choice in books for my time, money, energy, focus, etc.

That’s all.

And melodrama aside, it wasn’t for me, so I metaphorically spat it out, put it aside, and didn’t bother finishing it. I clearly wasn’t the audience. I wish the author success and all that.

As for my Rating? I’d give Dead Line by Alessandra Benini the single French fry of Burger King rating:๐ŸŸ

Forgettable, didn’t bother finishing, not worth the calories.

Toodle-oodle-oodle-loo!
