I was surprised at the time jump from chapter 1 to chapter 2.

We left Louise barely 11 weeks pregnant to her daughter, Poppy, now 5.
Louise is going through the typical mom guilt routine.

She gets a sudden phone call from her distant brother, Mark, telling her that her parents are now dead. They died in a car accident, hit by a drunk driver, I think.

Hendrix describes this moment like all the lights in the whole city turning off until it’s the last one above Louise, and my brain just auto went to the quick zoom realization that hits hard. I loved that part.

The way it’s worded, I suspect maybe he was the driver? Or knows who was the driver?

Anyways, Louise tells her daughter, and her daughter melts down, naturally.

Jokes aside, this part was rough. My child is around Poppy’s age, and I can’t imagine how hard that would be to try and explain death. H311, I’m an adult, and I still have a hard time with it.
The chapter continues on about how Louise remembers her parents, first her mom, then, her dad. Very different people.

This sets up a tone for the following chapters where we’re likely to dive into the haunted part of the titular haunted house, assuming it’s her parents’ home she has to go sort out and try to sell. It’s very solemn and reflective.

For this chapter, the rating is:
•Coca-Cola
•Air
•Creepy Vibes
•Page Turner
•Nose Exhale
•I Need a Hug
•Arby’s

Now, I’m hungry…
That’s an Arby’s Wrap!

Cheer-ee-o!
