My Nope Tropes (AKA Things That Instantly Lower My Rating) ((Last Update 3/11/26))

Everyone has tropes they love. Everyone also has tropes that make them slowly lower the book, stare at the wall, and whisper, “Oh no…”

These are mine.
This list doesn’t mean a book is automatically bad if one of these shows up. But if several of them appear at once, the story is already drifting dangerously close to Cheese Whiz territory on my rating scales.

Immediate Intimacy Without Chemistry
You know the one. Two characters meet and suddenly they are ripping clothes off, declaring overwhelming attraction, ready to die for each other
And I’m sitting here like, I barely know their last names.
I need tension. I need buildup. I need a reason these two people want each other beyond “the plot requires it.”
Otherwise it feels like we skipped three chapters of emotional development.

Cheating / Infidelity
This one is a hard boundary for me.
If a character knowingly participates in cheating, it instantly lowers my investment in them.
It’s not about moral grandstanding. It’s about respect for characters and relationships.
If the story treats it casually, I struggle to root for the people involved.
And once I lose respect for the main character, the story has to work very hard to win me back.

It’s not edgy. It’s selfish and cruel.

“I Couldn’t Help Myself” – Aka, “I can’t control what I’ll do to you.” or “If we’re alone I won’t be responsible for my actions.” or “You make me lose control.”
No.
Adults are responsible for their behavior.
Framing desire as something a character cannot control doesn’t feel romantic to me. It just feels lazy. And frankly? It’s gross. Consent is sexy, this is not.

Shadow Daddy (Unearned Edition)
I enjoy a broody character as much as the next reader. But brooding alone is not a personality. If a character is described as dark, mysterious, dangerous, or tortured, I want to see why.
Give me internal conflict, loyalty, difficult choices, emotional depth. Otherwise he’s not a shadow daddy. He’s just a guy standing in the corner with good lighting. Give me the Doom Slayer, give me Adam Jensen, give me James Raynor, give me Leon Kennedy, give me friggin’ Matthew Kane. These dudes would literally go through Hell to save you. Not some dude like, RAWR, I’m incel energy angst hardcore! Naw…

Bad@$$ Boss B!tch Because Reasons
I love strong female characters. But strength isn’t something a book can just declare. If a character is described as powerful, intimidating, or unstoppable without actually earning it through actions, skills, or consequences, it feels hollow. Show me the struggle. Show me the growth. Show me the scars. Don’t just give me the title.

Using Sexuality as a Distraction
Seduction can be interesting when it’s strategic. But when sexuality becomes the character’s entire toolkit (or worse, their only personality trait) it starts to feel shallow. At that point the story stops being about character and starts being about spectacle. And I’d much rather read about someone outsmarting their enemies than distracting them with cleavage.

Final Thoughts
These tropes don’t automatically ruin a book. But they do mean the story has to work a lot harder to win me over. If a book manages to overcome them, I’ll happily admit it. But if several show up at once?
Well…
Let’s just say the rating scale starts drifting toward Cheese Whiz.
