The imagery that magic makes it spring and full of colors and flowers on the faerie side of the gate isn’t lost on me. It’s supposed to feel all happy and bright compared to her bleak snowy home.
Is it terrible that I’m rolling my eyes at how “opulent” (her word not mine, though, now I can use the Dragrace Opulence gif, so, thank you for that) this mansion or whatever of her captive is? Like, it feels a bit absurd.
I rolled my eyes so hard, I may have whiplashed myself. Of course LWE is a golden-haired man…and of course he’s one of the High Fae, part of the nobility, “beautiful, lethal, and merciless” gags and of course he’s young and hot and they’re going to end up together. But of course! If I roll my eyes any harder, I may see my brain…
Lucien instead of Lucian. Alis instead of Alice. Wow, even I’m annoyed at the spelling of names, but that’s not a surprise when the book has Elaine spelled wrong 🤪
Aaaand important exposition dump while she’s walking away is said in loud tones convenient for her to overhear.
Plucked her…what’s that supposed to mean? Like, tamed her brows? Good heavens am I just being oblivious? They bathed her, cut her hair and plucked her until she felt like a chicken. Did she have fleas??
So, I’m told Maas does well writing romantasies. I’m hoping things get better as promised, but so far, even skipping over actually dialogue when we’re present with her is irritating. Like, you’re telling me…please show me instead? What does Alis sound like? All the faeries have masks, which makes me assume they transform into whatever animal masks they wear.
“I might have thought it tacky had the ivory furniture and rugs not complemented it so well.” Giiirrl! You lived in a pig pen back at your cottage! So hoity-toity about fae decór, yeesh! Lolol
I’m being overly snarky on purpose, obviously. Again, probably not my specific flavor of this genre. I definitely prefer stuff to feel more real and earned, and I understand the irony in that while reading a fantasy romance.
Yay! Alis actually speaks! And not pretending that she didn’t before when she did but it wasn’t on the page even though it was implied!
I’m like, why is I’m-spelling-it-as-Alice Alis being so nice to Cheese? And then, I’m like, oh, I see what you’re doing Maas. You’ve done some work making us as the readers suspicious of all faerie things, and I’m suspicious now, flameo, hotman, flame-me-oh.
